Egosurfing for Motivation

OK I admit it, I egosurf. That's where you perform internet searches for your own name and see what turns up. It's tougher for people with more common names. Fortunately, my name is a little less common, so my searches are easier to sift through.

Tonight I egosurfed and found some very nice compliments on my Weird Tales story, "The Yankee at the Sitting-Up," from a very cool writer named Scott Andrews:
As a fantasy writer, the Southern gothic has always intrigued me, but I haven't yet found a way to make it work within what I do.

Clayton sure made it work in his short piece. The speculative element was slight, which isn't a problem for me, but the characterization and the setting just dripped from his word-choice and descriptions. It might've helped that I knew all those things he was talking about, so the story leapt right off the page for me.
I haven't written much in the past year; it hasn't been a good year for me at all, but finding nice things that were said about stuff I've written gives me a good kick in the ass to do more. This was just what I needed to hear today. Thanks Scott!

KGB Fantasy Fiction Readings

The KGB Bar on the lower east side of NYC hosts readings by fantasy writers on the third Wednesday of each month. I was at this past Wednesday's reading with Holly Black and Lauren McLaughlin. It's a lot of fun (and resulted in this peculiar looking pic of me).

Weird Tales magazine is having a reading event at the next one, October 15 starting at 7pm. I will be at that one, too, I hope.

Weird Tales Story Published!

My story "The Yankee at the Sitting-Up" is now published! It's in the latest issue of Weird Tales, #347. You can see the cover, the contents, and even order a copy here.

I've been having a terrible time of it this past month personally and haven't been able to focus or be productive. But it's the new year, and change is afoot. I hope to have new stuff to put up here soon.

Odyssey Classmate Publications

A pair of guys from my 2006 Odyssey class have had recent publications.

Dave Hendrickson, "Agent of the Disease," The Indie Underground

Larry Hodges, First Place in Space Western Limerick Contest

(I know I've missed others' publications--sorry!--but if you're an Odyssey class of 2006 member and want me to make note of a sale, drop me an email)

Updated Weird Tales Site

Weird Tales has updated their website. It's easier to read now. One of their coolest new features: "...all our fiction posts will include the option to download a printable PDF of the story."

Bibliography Page and Updates

I've added a long-overdue bibliography page to the site. You'll find some writing I've done recently, as well as some going back a decade or more. Unfortunately, I don't have links for all that's listed, but eventually I hope to get digital versions made and placed on the site.

The Weird Tales story isn't out yet, so no link for that one obviously.

I have some very old stuff I'd like to put up at some point, too--comics I wrote more than twenty years ago, like Gopher Guy and His Army and my science fiction series Space Odyssey. I think they're at my parents' house now, though. If I can find them, I'll post them in the future.
